Welcome to 2009, The Year of the Author

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

I have declared 2009 “The Year of The Author.” The current trends in the publishing industry are signs that more change will take place in the next year(s) than have occurred in the past 50 years, and it’s all good for authors.

For example, we may never again have to hear an agent or editor say how only one (1) percent of what comes across his or her desk gets accepted. Guess what? Those editors and agents are now out trolling the Internet, looking for authors who have made a success of their work on their own because while the “professionals” were arrogantly dismissing the unknowns, the “accepted” authors turned out to be frauds (memoir liars), bad bets (celebrity stories that didn’t sell) or such big draws via huge advances that sales couldn’t catch up and turn a profit. A recent story in Publisher’s Weekly describes how some self-published authors have attracted some very hefty advances for their books because they have proven results.

Yes! Now is the best time in the history of publishing to be an author if you are willing to step up to the challenge of being a bit of a pioneer. I have my wagon packed and I’m ready for the new frontier. You are invited to come with me if you want to mine the gold, too.

How to Make 2009 The Year of The Author

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Did you add “publish my book” to yet another New Year’s Resolutions list?  Would you be closer to your goal if you knew how to:

  • Decide if you should traditional publish or self-publish
  • Find legitimate agents and publishers and avoid scams
  • Choose the right POD publisher
  • Find markets for your work
  • Build a waiting audience before your book comes out
  • Use the Internet to market and sell your work
  • Use social networking sites effectively (and not waste your time)

There are more opportunities to get published than ever before—if you know what you’re doing. And with all the changes, it’s harder than ever to know what to do. Who will survive the 2009 publishing climate?

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

If you thought getting published was a tough road before, strap yourself in tightly, because 2009 promises to present authors and publishers with some all-time tough challenges, some that have never been faced before. On Monday, November 24, 2008 Publisher’s Weekly reported in a Special Alert that Houghton Mifflin Harcourt had asked its editors to stop buying books. No new acquisitions! The startling announcement comes on the heels of reports from publishers and booksellers in past weeks of gloomy forecasts for a less-than-merry holiday season based on poor third quarter results and a weak economy. In the same article, literary agents echo the  indications of a sluggish market.

So, should you give up on your dream and wait for better times? Hell, no!  History has shown that there’s a silver lining to be found inside every dark cloud. Books in Print publisher Bowker reported that over 400,000 new titles were published in 2007, up from 300,000 in 2006, so clearly every author and publisher faces the challenge of competing for readers.

Who will survive and even flourish in this market? VIP Authors. Authors who learn the ins and outs of the industry, become familiar with the publishing process and learn the latest marketing strategies as well as the tried-and-true methods.
